How to choose a Feng Shui Consultant
In selecting a Feng Shui Consultant make sure that the person you choose is qualified. Here are some typical questions to ask of your prospective consultant.

Do they practice classical or traditional Feng Shui?

There are many schools within classical Feng Shui, East/West System (also known as the Eight-House School), and the Nine Floating Stars (also known as Flying Star). Other  traditional methods are the Sanhe School and Qimen Dunjia (also known as the Mystical Door School) which are more popular in Asia and schools based on the intuitive method (such as the Black Sect theory). Schools based on the intuitive method alone (such as the Black Sect theory) are not scientifically accurate.

What do they need to assess your home or office?

They need the year your home was built, the birth dates of the occupants, a floor plan, and information on additions. If they do not ask you for this information I would not hire them.

Remember, Feng Shui is a precise, measurable, mathematical system.

What tools will they use to assess your home or office?

A compass or 'Luo Pan' is used to determine your home’s direction and orientation. A standard ‘energy map’ is not appropriate . This is often affiliated with Black Sect theory and an imitation bagua is used as an energy map which is not measurable.

What kind of remedies do you use?

The five elements of fire, earth, metal, water, and wood. Other remedies can be incorporated after proper analysis.

What can I expect from an assessment?

Feng Shui calculates probabilities, not certainties. A consultant cannot make guarantees that you will become rich, or that you will be cured of your illness or that you will marry.

How much does a Feng Shui assessment cost?

Some charge by the square footage, some by an hourly rate and some by a flat fee. All are acceptable and prices vary among Feng Shui professionals. A reference or two helps to determine the chemistry between you and the consultant.

Where did they get their training?
Who did they study with?

How many places have they assessed? A high fee doesn’t necessarily mean quality. Training at facilities such as Colleges, Universities, Institutes such as The American Feng Shui Institute (teaches classical Feng Shui and offers advanced studies and case studies for their qualified graduates) and study under a Feng Shui Master is most desirable.

How long does this process take?

Some consultants spend time asking you questions to determine your comfort level in your environment and seek to make an assessment with needed remedies according to your wants and needs. Expect the professional to survey your property. Allow him or her to walk completely around the outside of your home and then around the inside of your home. He/she will leave and generate a report off-premise, or it will be done on-site. Either way you should expect to receive valuable information in a clear and comprehensive way. If you have questions, he/she should accept follow-up calls. You should also receive an invoice for the services rendered. Placement of remedies or observing the placement of remedies are often done by the Feng Shui professional, if at all possible.
